Who are we?  

Sphere Studios is shaping the future of immersive entertainment.  The custom camera systems that we build and manage are at the heart of that vision. Our in-house team is inventing new workflows, defining new aesthetics, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with high-fidelity, large-format capture systems. 

The Lead Camera Technician will be responsible for supporting Big Sky, Sphere’s custom camera platform, across various live-action field teams and remote units. This role ensures that system is field-ready, production-proven, well prepped, and working smoothly for internal teams and freelance operators. The Lead Camera Technician will manage hands-on support in the lab and field, create clear workflows from prep to wrap to data handoff, and build robust feedback loops that mate logically with engineering and service leadership. You will also help support the ongoing experimentation that defines the aesthetic vocabulary of Sphere. 

This role is a technical field support role that will own and manage camera systems and hardware tools for Sphere cinematography.  It will also keep our broad palette of custom camera and camera support tools working reliably.  Expect to work closely with Sphere Capture, Production, Post-Production, and engineering teams on projects that extend beyond traditional camera systems, camera control, and camera movement.   

What will you do?  

  • Manage and maintain Big Sky camera systems and related hardware for reliable field and studio use 
  • Be a lead technical resource for Big Sky across all environments and deployments - in workshop, on-site and remotely, as needed. 
  • Work with Senior Director Camera Operations to create training materials and onboarding workflows for freelance and internal capture technicians 
  • Troubleshoot, identify, and resolve technical issues, document fixes and detail use cases, and perform a baseline of maintenance and repairs in the field 
  • Work closely with Director of Camera Technology to maintain a detailed bug log, track and communicate issues to engineering and service teams 
  • Support ongoing capture testing and experimentation that informs and matures the Sphere format and immersive visual language 
  • Work with engineering, production, post, and support teams to evolve the system beyond traditional camera paradigms 
  • Lead on-set camera slating, camera support, metadata logging, and documentation as needed 
  • Support Capture leadership hire, train, and support external camera technicians as required for key Capture projects 
  • Support Big Sky system for production prep and wrap.  

What do you need to succeed?  

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience 
  • 5+ years of experience as a 1st or 2nd Assistant Camera, field technician, or technical camera operator. 
  • Experience in field or rental house service and repair professional cameras preferred 
  • Deep familiarity with camera systems, optics, focus, and sensor technologies 
  • Experience with camera maintenance, repairs, and custom rigs or experimental setups 
  • Understanding of the latest film and video production processes, digital workflows, production and post-production tools, equipment, and protocols  
  • Proven ability to operate independently, be adaptable, flexible, and make critical decisions in high-pressure environments 
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to create documentation and technical guides 
  • Comfortable working hands-on with hardware, complicated travel logistics, and supporting remote deployments in rugged terrain 
  • Be detail oriented and organized 
  • Experience in immersive media, virtual reality, large-format photography, and/or multi-camera array systems preferred

$107,000$125,000 USD
