Who are we hiring?
The Senior Technical Director reports to Vice President of Event Production and will work in tandem with Sphere Event Production Managers to advance all technical requirements for integration into Sphere systems for events. The Senior Director, Technical Director will oversee the day of event technical logistics of the assigned live events or performances. This includes but not limited to Audio, Video, Broadcast, Rigging, Staging, Scenic and Lighting.
What will you do?
- Works collaboratively with venue Technical Production departments to communicate technical specifications of sphere systems, equipment, and infrastructure accurately to incoming productions.
- Leads technical walk throughs and site visits to ensure a successful advancement, load in, rehearsal and changeover of external events.
- Provides operational & execution guidance on Technical Design and Planning for all aspects of assigned shows within Sphere. This includes collaboration of all departments including video playback, audio systems, broadcast, rigging, automation and production & architectural lighting.
- Oversees and manages process/timeline of development of technical production elements, across each element in lead up to each Sphere show
- Oversees and confirms all aspects of design provided by Studio and makes sure each is implemented prior to rehearsals
- Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the Sphere, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, video, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities – ensuring that each is used in adherence to Sphere brand standards.
- Reviews designs, set ups, and coordinates the advancement of lighting, video and sound systems for attractions, residencies, events, and other productions and projects; assists guest designers and artists with technical matters
- Advises production managers and show producers, lighting, and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
- Monitors the installation of outside equipment including lighting, sound, video, and rigging equipment, coordinating with all Sphere departments regarding the integration of all guest systems to Sphere systems.
- Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the Sphere in advance of production dates.
- Assist in the planning and tracking of budgets related to maintenance costs & estimates, utility cost estimates, and event cost estimates including internal and 3rd party labor requirements.
- Collaborates with Sphere Studios to ensure proper coordination of show programming in advance of live events.
- Oversees all technical rehearsals supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting the show.
- Oversees the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
- Supervises assigned technical production crew and operating staff for the event
What do you need to succeed?
- High level of expertise in all areas of entertainment production technology, (rigging systems, lighting systems, audio systems, video playback and LED surfaces, and automation).
- 10 plus years’ experience supervising highly efficient and performing teams.
- Proven track record of successfully managing a team in a complex, fast-paced, and diverse environment, preferably in a live event venue or theater management role.
- Strong technical knowledge of rigging, fall protection, and safety equipment and protocols. ETCP Certification and/or Arena/Theater training a plus.
- Strong technical knowledge of theatrical production systems including but not limited to lighting, audio, and intercom systems.
- Working knowledge of specialty production systems including video and playback systems and show control systems.
- Windows/PC proficient and experience using Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Professional and Bluebeam. Experience with AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
- Ability to work at height (upwards of 200’-300’+) on interior and exterior catwalks and on building maintenance unit.
- Extensive standing, walking, keyboard usage and general administrative duties
- Occasional travel to NY or Burbank, CA (<10%)
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule inclusive of weekends, nights and holidays. May have split days off.
